My name is Melissa Robinson. I am currently a senior working towards achieving my Secondary Education and Applied Mathematics majors at Grand View University. Some have called me a lifetime student. I have been in undergraduate classes off and on for most of my adult life. I have studied nursing, business and now education. My biggest accomplishments are my three sons.
In working towards my bachelors, it has become apparent to me that technology is a huge part of the lives of my sons, students, and colleagues. With people ranging in ages from 0 - 100+ in the world of the internet, the term plagiarism has taken on a new meaning. This website is intended to show how often plagiarism happens, why it happens and what we can do to prevent it. This website has given clear ideas to teachers and students to ensure this happens. I have also included several resources for teachers and students to use.
While researching about plagiarism to write this website, I found some bad habits of my own. When I was writing notes for later use, I hadn't included the sources so I had to go back and find them again. Not the easiest task. It did help me decide which sources were the best choice though. I wanted to include statistics and those are a dime a dozen. It seems statistics are completed on any subject area often. I chose well-known universities or academic statistic websites when I wanted to use stats. I looked for other resources that weren't someone's opinion and instead fact based with current references.
The assignment of developing this website for my Instructional Technologies class has been an eye opening experience. I have developed a website before but I had six months and there was little research to be completed as it was for our business. This time I have had about 3 weeks of hands on design and research time. I have learned that I am able to complete it but I wish I had more time to put into it. It is just a small portion of the world of plagiarism out there. The biggest struggles developing this website have been layout, font, and color. I found myself spending so much time on these items that it was taking away from the big picture. The current issue! So I stopped and went back to one basic font and used underlining and larger size font for headings. I actually like this better than before when I was trying colors and different types of fonts! I think this has helped me know the kinds of things I want in a website for my future classroom. I want a page about me for my students sake. I want them to be able to easily click for other resources or help. I want it to be easily navigated and simple. All in all as a 40 year old returning student I enjoyed the time I spent on the development of this website and that I have a lot more to learn every day about technology!
